Who we are
We are Artisans Kashmir, a company started with the intention to uplift the soul of Kashmir arts and crafts- Our artisans and craftsmen.
With an industry that has bloomed on the back of their efforts, we believe these artisans are poorly paid and underrepresented in the very business that exists because of them.Pashmina Shawl weavers, Pashmina Sozni artisans, Kani Shawl master artisans, Hand Knotted Silk Carpet makers, Paper Machie artists, Aari work and Sozni work artisans, Walnut Wood Hand Carving artists, and even the farms of saffron, almonds, and walnuts. These are the people responsible for the thriving market in Kashmir, and our company aims to bring them the recognition and conditions they deserve.
Currently, these artisans are usually underpaid by the big houses. Working on ecomonomies of scale, the big garment and handicraft businesses take a much larger cut of the profits, leaving the workers an unfair amount of compensation.
Unfortunately, this has led to an increase in turnover in the industry, with many artists leaving the business, opting to work as daily wage labourers instead.
The sad truth is that this exodus of our most valuable talents will lead to the slow extinction of local Kashmir arts and crafts. As locals who have seen the beauty and resilience of the artisan community here, we wanted to do our part in not just conserving this rich tradition and history, but enrich it with efforts of our own.
Artisans Kashmir is our mission to rescue these fading crafts and the people behind them, in our determination to support these artisans.
Artisans Kashmir is a platform for local artisans and craftsmen to sell their products directly to buyers in India and Worldwide at a fair price that they can support themselves with. By reducing the middlemen, we aim to bring Kashmir’s wonderful artisan culture closer to the world, and allow for more equitable profit distribution within the business while doing so.
We believe each artist should get the true value of their talent and hard work. And Artisans Kashmir is a mission for the customers too, allowing for genuine art at fair prices, which you know will go directly to supporting the artists.
With authentic and original products, and a mission to improve the market for our local artisans, Artisans Kashmir’s mission will always be to put the rich culture of our state first
